Do I even need a website?”
My current website is good enough.”
My website looks fine to me.”
Have you had any of these thoughts as a business owner?
You might know your website isn’t perfect, but if it’s doing the job, does it really matter?
Actually, yes.
Your website is often one of the first places a potential customer goes when they discover your business. And while first impressions matter, it isn’t just about whether your website ‘looks’ good. It needs to work well, too.
If your website is confusing, outdated, difficult to navigate or simply takes too long to get someone to the information they need, there’s a good chance they’ll move on.
A good website should make four things obvious:
What
you do
Who
you do it for
Why
someone should choose you
What
they should do next
If visitors need to hunt around to work these things out, you’re creating resistance between them and your business.
You're damaging your credibility
Your business might be excellent. Your team might be experienced. Your service might be exactly what a customer is looking for.
But if your website looks like it hasn’t been touched in a decade, or even two, people might not stick around long enough to find out.
Websites are becoming increasingly modern, intuitive and easy to use. If yours feels bulky, dated or difficult to navigate, it can make an otherwise great business look less established or trustworthy.
And it’s often the little things that make the difference:
None of these things necessarily mean your business is bad. But they can influence how people perceive your business.
Your website needs to work on a phone. Full stop.
Think about how often you use your phone to look up a business, check a service or find a contact number.
Your customers are doing the same.
A website that looks great on a desktop but is awkward to use on a phone isn’t doing its job properly. If visitors are pinching, zooming, scrolling sideways or struggling to click a button, you’ve made it harder for them to engage with your business.
Mobile-friendly isn’t really an optional extra anymore. It’s a basic requirement.
And it’s not just about mobile usability. Things like slow loading times, poor page structure and weak or unclear content can also make it harder for people to find your website through search.
You're trying to improve your marketing... but your website is getting in the way
This one is particularly important.
You can spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars getting people to click on a Google or Meta ad. You can put time and money into social media, email marketing and other campaigns designed to bring people to your website.
But what happens when they get there?
If the landing page is confusing, slow, outdated or doesn’t clearly tell them what to do next, you may lose them before they ever become a customer.
The problem isn’t necessarily your advertising. There’s little point paying to bring more people to your website if the website isn’t ready to convert them.
Get the foundations right first.
Then bring people through the door.
So... is your website actually doing its job?
Here’s a little quiz
Your website might need some attention if:
If you’ve ticked a few of those boxes, it might be time to take another look at your website.
A bad website isn't necessarily an ugly website.
It’s a website that isn’t doing its job.
Your website doesn’t need to be the flashiest website on the internet. It needs to clearly communicate who you are, make it easy for customers to find what they’re looking for, and give them a clear next step.
